This is lame. In the cross-country skiing track and secondly, I'm very offended. All sports, I think running the reqired greater commitment and responsibility. If cheerleading is considered a "Sport" that is definitely not working (which I feel the need to convince anyone.)

As preposterous as that sounds — after all, Marriott was the heart, soul, and voice of the band — that’s exactly what took place on the 2002 release Back on Track. The trusty old Humble Pie rhythm section is back in place (bassist Greg Ridley and drummer Jerry Shirley), who are joined by guitarist Bob Tench and vocalist Dave Colwell. And despite being issued in the early 21st century, songs such as the album-opening “Dignified” and “Ain’t No Big Thing” have an unmistakable ’80s mainstream rock feel to them. Which is quite puzzling, as it was grit and soul that served as major ingredients on the majority of classic, Marriott-led Humble Pie releases. While it’s understandable that Ridley and Shirley would want to get together and start playing once more — Humble Pie was quite a mean rockin’ machine back in the day — this “new look” lineup simply doesn’t do the Humble Pie legacy justice. ~ Greg Prato |

Love For Sale (Bonus Track) (Ogv) $25.98 Personnel: Cecil Taylor (piano); Bill Barron (tenor saxophone); Ted Curson (trumpet); Buell Neidlinger (bass); Dennis Charles (drums).Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.Recorded at Nola Studios, New York, New York on April 15, 1959.This may be the straightest record Cecil Taylor ever recorded, but it is far from uninspiring. Despite its hopelessly gauche cover — one can only presume Taylor had no say-so in the choice of artwork used — Taylor’s approach to three Cole Porter tunes with a trio and three of his own with a quintet is a lively combination, and one which, in lieu of his later work, reveals the construction of his system of improvisation better than his later records do when he is playing from the middle of it. Accompanied by Dennis Charles on drums and Buell Neidlinger on bass, Taylor dives deep into Porter’s “I Love Paris,” a shifty little pop song. Taylor goes head to head with Neidlinger in a contrapuntal statement of the melody — illustrated by chord changes which are extrapolated from the melodic sequence — against harmony before actually flowing into the main theme of the tune for a moment before kicking the rhythm section loose and treating the tune percussively, almost as if it were a series of rhythm changes instead of harmonic ones. On the title track it’s much the same, except Taylor’s tenderness shines through in his lilting right hand in the middle as he trades fours with Charles. There’s a wonderful cut-time tempo here, and Taylor starts building scales harmonically in his solo only to answer them with the melody and original harmony. With his own three tunes, with trumpeter Ted Curson and saxophonist Bill Barron added to the fray, Taylor takes more chances. On “Little Lees (Louise),” he scores in an elaborate melody that is played without dissonance by the horn section as he and Neidlinger play entirely in counterpoint. But here, too, there is a sublime lyricism at work; there are no extra notes or chords, and everything falls in line with the chromatic architecture Taylor composes with. “Maities Trophie” is Taylor ringing in a blues jam ? la Ellington — or at least his version of Ellington. The solos by Curson and Barron are tight, narrative, and bordering on swing, but all that’s taken care of by Taylor’s solo. Love for Sale is a delightful anomaly in Cecil Taylor’s long career. ~ Thom Jurek |

While not absolutely essential, it should certainly be the next purchase for anyone who already owns all of the official Marley albums. While the disc is perhaps a little light on variety, it’s still a Bob Marley album and thus as good as the best work of many other artists. Overall, CONFRONTATION is great mellow summertime listening and a worthy addition to any reggae collection. |

The title of this disc, West Coast Jazz, was conceived as a joke, considering all musicians involved were originally from the East Coast and did not play exclusively in the laid-back, commercially profitable, cool style, as pigeonholed by some. Stan Getz was in California for his part in the film the Benny Goodman Story, where he picked up a week long gig at Zardi’s in Hollywood. The pickup band that greeted him featured a great rhythm section: Lou Levy (piano), Leroy Vinnegar (bass), and Shelly Manne (drums), along with Conte Candoli (trumpet). These musicians connected with Getz immediately, having crossed paths previously. Impressed with this lineup, he took them into the studio to record West Coast Jazz. Generally unlike West Coast jazz of the time, the rapid group interplay with energized bop solos, still stand out particularly on “S-H-I-N-E” and Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night in Tunisia.” Coupled with the album’s original six tracks, the Verve Master Edition collects several previously released outtakes from these sessions. ~ Al Campbell |
